DUST NETWORKS ANNOUNCES PRODUCTION SHIPMENT OF EMBEDDED WIRELESSHART SENSOR NETWORKING SOLUTION
Dr. Kris Pister to Give Keynote at ISA – The Evolution of Wireless Sensor Networking
HAYWARD, Calif., (Oct 14, 2008) —Dust Networks, the leading supplier of wireless sensor networking products, is now shipping its SmartMesh® IA-510 system, the industry’s first interoperable embedded WirelessHART™ solution. The system combines Dust Networks’ robust Intelligent Networking Platform and its industry-leading, low-power radio technology to deliver a complete embedded solution. Compliant to the WirelessHART Communication Specification (HART 7.1), the industry’s first open wireless standard, SmartMesh IA-510 allows industrial automation vendors to seamlessly integrate wireless networking into their existing sensors and solution architecture or to update existing HART devices with WirelessHART adapters.
“Interoperability has been a missing link in the wireless sensor networking industry and one of the key reasons end-users were reluctant to invest significantly in earlier technology,” said Dust Networks’ President and CEO Joy Weiss. “Major suppliers are now offering interoperable wireless sensors. This is an industry game-changer that, combined with the economic benefits wireless solutions provide, will lead to ubiquitous use by the industrial market,” added Weiss.
Sophisticated Dust-enabled wireless sensors from major OEM vendors including Emerson, GE Energy, GE Sensing, Pepperl+Fuchs, and Yokogawa, as well as a wireless mesh backbone solution from industry partners Emerson and Cisco Systems, will be on display and included in a demonstration in the Dust Networks booth #1434 at the ISA Expo on October 14-16 in Houston, TX. In addition, end users from a wide range of industries including petrochemical, pharmaceutical, mining and electric power will be able to learn about current industry applications and ROI statistics.
Wireless sensor networks are being deployed across a wide range of applications to help meet business objectives in a highly competitive global economy by dramatically increasing productivity, monitoring for predictive maintenance issues before they become problematic and improving upon worker safety.
The low cost of deployment (savings of up to 90% versus installing wireline), ultra low battery power requirements (7-10 years average battery life from the equivalent of two AA batteries), high degree of reliability and industrial grade security, combined with the ease of integration into an OEMs existing sensor and gateway systems makes wireless sensors well positioned for growth.
“The availability of standardized wireless field devices from several leading suppliers will certainly be a positive factor spurring continued market growth,” said Harry Forbes of ARC Advisory Group. “In addition, WirelessHART devices stand to benefit from the huge installed base of HART devices and applications, and also from the fact that process manufacturers are already very familiar with HART,” he added.
Kris Pister, Founder and CTO of Dust Networks will address ISA attendees at the keynote presentation on Tuesday, October 14 at 11:00 AM, Room 301, discussing early applications of “smart dust” technology, its current and future use in industry and the opportunities in energy infrastructure, commercial building systems and smart cities.
