World Environment Day is sponsored by the United Nations' Environment Program. Hayward, Calif., – June 1, 2005 – Dust Networks, (www.dustnetworks.com), the leading provider of enterprise-class low-power wireless mesh networking systems, today demonstrated the energy-saving impact of its SmartMeshT wireless mesh networks at World Environment Day in San Francisco.Dust Networks has developed energy monitoring and management solutions around its SmartMesh wireless mesh networking software that allow users to economically collect accurate and complete information about energy usage, and use that information to save energy and save money. Heating, cooling, and lighting systems in commercial buildings and industrial environments can now all be monitored, analyzed, and managed more closely, resulting in both cost savings and environmental benefits. The U.S. Department of Energy is encouraging the development of "smart buildings" that incorporate new technologies that reduce costs, lower emissions, and save on energy consumption. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, America's buildings use over 30 quadrillion BTUs (quads) of energy per year. A quad of energy can run all the residential refrigerators in the U.S. for one year. Without new energy conservation technologies, energy use could reach approximately 40 quads by 2020 --- an increase of more than 30 per cent. "Prior to wireless mesh networking technologies, it was difficult to measure energy consumption at a granular level due to the cost of installation and wiring," said Rob Conant, Dust Networks' co-founder and Vice-President of Marketing & Business Development. "SmartMesh wireless technology gives greater visibility into the energy consumption patterns of businesses, increases the number of opportunities for monitoring, and in general makes it easier for organizations to initiate and manage energy efficiency programs, which is good for business and good for the environment. We are pleased to be part of the University of California's Pavilion, which showcases commercially available technologies that originated from University-funded research. This reflects the critical role that research plays in developing new technologies for the environment." Dust Networks will be in the San Francisco City Hall on June 1, 2005 showcasing SmartMesh.
